FAQ

What is the difference between a medical doctor and a naturopathic doctor?

Both receive a comprehensive medical program over several years of post-graduate studies and both hold a Doctor of medicine degree, except that the Naturopathic doctor’s Degree is as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine.  What is particular about a naturopathic doctor is the objective of determining the root cause of a health concern.  The question that is asked is not “what hurts?”, it is rather “why does it hurt?”.  The treatment plan is tailored to the particular needs of the patient and is suited to that patient’s lifestyle with the objective of treating the source of the problem, thereby eliminating or alleviating the problem.

Can I see a naturopath and my family doctor at the same time?

Absolutely! You do not need to choose one or the other. In fact, Dr. Vé encourages you to maintain a relationship with your family doctor or specialists. She fosters a cooperative approach between health care professionals and values integrative care. Your health team should be comprised of multiple health care professionals. Naturopathic Doctors can recommend and monitor natural therapies or treatments that work with any mainstream medical therapies or medication you may have already been prescribed. Naturopathic Doctors are also trained to understand and avoid interactions between natural therapies and prescription medication. Dr. Vé can also recommend options to increase effectiveness or decrease side effects of mainstream treatments, procedures or prescriptions.

How are Naturopathic Doctors (ND) trained?

Naturopathic Doctors have a minimum of 7-8 years of post-secondary training. They must be trained at an accredited college of naturopathic medicine. This is a 4-year post-graduate program, whereby 1,500 hours of supervised clinical experience is required and training includes basic sciences (anatomy, embryology, histology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology), clinical sciences (laboratory diagnosis, physical and clinical diagnosis, radiology, minor surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics, gynaecology, geriatrics, environmental and public health, clinical nutrition and emergency medicine) and naturopathic treatment tools (herbal medicine, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, lifestyle and diet counselling). ND’s receive approximately 4,500 hours of academic and clinical training. After completion of the program, rigorous standardized exams must be passed.
